HAPPY NEW YEAR

A Happy New Year to you all from Maridi. May it be a year when you know a special blessing from God in your life and work for Him. I went to many parties over the festive season but now work continues as usual. I have ordered a new Land Cruiser so please pray I have no problems importing it. Pray too for rain, as in February the short rains should start, but during the past two years we have had nothing until May. It is very hot and dusty at present. I have two lively three week old puppies and kittens due at the end of the month.

NEW COLLEAGUE

Lynn, from Southport, arrived in Maridi on Nov. 17th and is settling in well. She is assisting in our Nursery School, and also teaching English to some of the Mother Union, and also how to read and write. She loves Maridi already. It is great to have another white friend. She is living in my guest house in my compound.

CMS CONFERENCE

I have just returned from Nairobi where I attended a joint conference between CMS UK and CMS Africa. All CMS Mission Partners who work in Africa were there, so I was able to do some useful networking too. We went out on a field trip and I went to a Nairobi slum to visit a secondary school where most of the pupils are former criminals, drug addicts, drunkards etc. from the slums, but they met Jesus, had their minds renewed in Jesus, and now the community is being transformed, and the crime rate is now nearly zero. Maridi is very OK. On 17th a volunteer from Southport called Lynn is due to arrive to help us with educational work. There is a very good harvest here this year and we should be able to help feed people in the famine areas too.

NEW NATION

Hello from our new nation of South Sudan. I recently spent a week on the Kenyan coast with friends from Christ Church, Southport. On Oct. 20th I leave for Nairobi for a joint conference between CMS UK and CMS Africa. We are very OK here in Maridi. Security is good. There is plenty of rain so the harvest is excellent. My colleague Marsha has had to leave to return to America to care for her sick mother. How is Filey? I think it is quieter now that the main visitor season has ended.

BACK IN MARIDI

I had a very good journey back to Uganda, spent five days there to get documents etc. and then came on to Maridi a week ago. I found things very OK in Maridi with good rain too. Security is good and our new country is moving forward. There were four kittens who have now gone to good homes - all the animals are well. Please keep praying for us.

HOLIDAY FUN

I am enjoying a two week holiday with Mum and Dad. We spent a week at Willersley Castle at Cromford in Derbyshire and are now at Lindors Country Hotel in the Wye Valley. Mum and Dad have been doing much walking and even some line dancing. The food has been excellent and so has the entertainment. We are due to arrive back in Filey on 13th and I fly to Africa on 17th.

Time is flying now as I only have three weeks before I leave to return to South Sudan. I am about to go on holiday with Mum and Dad for two weeks. I have finished visiting churches, CMS meetings, and done more work on my studies. News from Maridi is good and people are very enthusiastic about the new Republic of South Sudan. Pray that Maridi gets good rain, as if we have a good harvest we could help to feed people in the famine areas.

South Sudan Develops

Keep praying as the Republic of South Sudan is developing. The President is putting into action many plans he has had up his sleeve for a long time. Expectations and morale pf the people is high. To cement good relationships with North Sudan is a priority. The country is now a member state of the UN. In Maridi, rain has started again but needs to continue. They are eating their first crop of maize. It sounds as though at my house staff and animals are all well - with four kittens too.

REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN

The Republic of South Sudan came into being on July 9th as South Sudan separated from the North and became the world's newest nation. Challenging times are ahead as there are still many outstanding issues such as border demarcation, citizenship and oil revenues. The celebrations went on for many days and I look forward to setting foot in this new land when I return in August. It is vital that relationships between the North and South are good if both nations are to move forward, so keep praying.

Great to be back in UK. At present I am down South and had my medical, CMS meetings and am now at college in Gloucester for five days of gathering resources for my MA studies. I have also started to visit some of my Link Churches. Looking forward to preaching in Filey on June 19th. I am enjoying the cooler weather after the heat of Sudan . Remember Sudan in your prayers as the South becomes independent on July 9th.

BACK IN FILEY

I am now home in Filey after a long but problem free journey. Glad to experience cooler temperatures and no mosquitoes. Happy reunion with my parents and was encouraged to find they are both doing well. I have a very busy three months ahead of me with two weeks holiday right at the end. Looking forward to walking round Filey and seeing what changes there are. I hear Tescos has arrived. See you soon.

Bishop to celebrate 10 years

On April 29th Bishop Justin will celebrate 10 years since his consecration as Bishop. On April 14th we had an early party with all the pastors in the Diocese. On 29th we will have Archbishop, 10 Bishops plus 100 other guests from outside the Diocese with us, plus thousands of local people. The day will consist of starting with Holy Communion, then a time of reflecting as we look back, looking to the future, preaching, giving thanks and then the party with food and dancing. Rains have started but we need a dry day then as we will be under the mango trees for most of the time. I will leave Maridi on May 19th to start my journey to UK for three months Home Leave. I expect to arrive in Filey on May 23rd.

RAIN AT LAST

Temperatures are dropping as rain started yesterday. It is a little late but if it keeps coming we will be OK to start digging and planting seeds. Three groups of visitors from UK all here at present in Maridi, and all doing different things. No rest for anyone! Pray for my sister, Virginia, who lives in Grantham, who is very sick with a mystery illness.

ELECTRICITY

Praise God for our electricity! We now have it every day from 7.00am - midnight. I now have luxuries of kettle, iron, fan and even now have satellite TV with 24 channels - this includes South Sudan TV. Maridi is ahead of everywhere in Southern Sudan, even the capital Juba, as we now have electricity, piped water and a Beach.

MARIDI IS VERY OK

Not only did the Referendum happen but we did it well. Final official result due any day now. Preliminary results show overwhelming vote for South to separate from North. Pray as we start to build our new nation. Pray that the peace in the South continues. The church here also has good plans to develop, but will we have two Provinces instead of one as the country divides? There is also talk that they will build a new capital city for the South instead of the present capital Juba. I am very well and busy with writing discipleship books and with my MA studies. I hope to arrive in UK on May 23rd for three months Home Leave. My dog gave birth to eight puppies three days ago, and the cat is also pregnant again. Please pray for the short rains to start on time this month - we badly need rain, but not floods.

SUDAN REFERENDUM

What an amazing time we are having! God is answering our prayers in a wonderful way. Voting in the Referendum is from 9th - 15th January. There is a huge turnout of voters who are standing patiently in long queues. Much singing and dancing. Voting going peacefully amidst tight security. There is a real carnival atmosphere as we anticipate the beginning of our new nation. So much excitement that there is little sleep. Sick are being carried to the polling stations on beds or in wheelbarrows. One woman gave birth at the polling centre having walked a long way to get there as she was determined to vote. This is the highlight of my 12 years so far in Sudan. Keep praying that voting will be completed peacefully and that the result will be accepted by all.

Had great Christmas - very busy in Church as preached twice, but now able to relax. Went to great UN party with food from around the world. Maridi peaceful and people excited about Referendum. People love calendars with pictures of UK on them.

CHRISTMAS PREPARATIONS

I spent the first week of December in Arua in Uganda for a break and to do some shopping. Little sign of Christmas there, or in Maridi. Preparations will start about a week before, although this Christmas is overshadowed by the prospect of the Sudan Referendum in January. I am preaching on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Various invitations out for meals also. We don't normally give presents, but this year I will be handing out calendars with pictures of UK on them.

DRY SEASON

The rain has now stopped and dry season has come, so it is hot and dusty. Christmas is usually the hottest time of year. My MA studies are going well and I am busy with Discipleship Training and also teaching in our College. I will be in Uganda during the first week of December for a rest and shopping. Registration starts for the South Sudan Referendum on November 15th, and voting starts on January 9th, so pray for peaceful Referendum and that the results will be accepted by all. Tension is rising as we approach it. I have two tiny kittens born six days ago.

WORK GOING WELL

We are very OK here in Maridi. I am ahead with my MA studies and now also teach New Testament in our College every Wednesday. I will be glad when the January Referendum is over as tension is rising. We have baby chicks, and kittens will soon be born. Rain is beginning to stop as dry season approaches. Am delaying buying my new vehicle for a year.

BUSY STUDYING

I am enjoying being back in Maridi and have got back into the routine of studying again. I have also just written another Discipleship Training booklet on the Ten Commandments. We have a good mixture of sun and rain so weather has been a little cooler. Next week a white lady from America called Marsha Martin is coming to live in Maridi. The first white friend I will have had in Maridi for a long time! She will do literacy training. My ex driver Wilson, is now working at Juba Airport driving the fire engine there.

Hello. I am now back in Maridi after long but good journeys when God over ruled with potential problems. Found house, animals, and staff well. Only sadness is resignation of my driver, Wilson, after ten faithful years of service. My assistant driver, Jackson, steps into his shoes. Rain is good so we expect good harvest this year. Hello from Filey. I had a great time with my parents at the Keswick Convention and then on holiday at Hawick in Scotland. I return to Africa on 18th but before that we will go to Surrey for the funeral of my father's sister on 16th. News from Maridi has been good and I look forward to getting back and seeing everyone again, including my animals. Bishop Justin is in Kampala so I will meet him there before I fly on to Maridi on 24th. Keep praying, especially for the health of my parents.

On July 24th I leave to spend a week at the Keswick Convention with my parents. After that we go to Hawick in Scotland for ten days holiday. I leave to return to Sudan on August 18th. STUDIES COMPLETED

I have now finished the three week Summer School for my MA studies. It was hard work but great. Now I have many assignments to write once I return to Sudan. Next week I return to Oxford for a CMS Consultation on Sudan as we look at how CMS can best serve the church in Sudan. After that I go to Hull to visit four churches there. Then on to the Keswick Convention for a week and finally ten days in Scotland with my parents. I fly back to Africa on August 18th. News from Maridi seems good with staff and animals well and some rain, but not enough. Some other good news is that a friend of mine called Marsha who has visited Maridi several times for literacy work, is transferring to actually live in Maridi. It will be great to have another white person around.

MA STUDIES

Hello. I am now half way through the three week Summer School for my MA studies. I am at Redcliffe College in Gloucester. It is absolutely great. As I start the second year my modules this year are 'An Introduction to Global Leadership' and 'Prosperity Theology'. Both topics are so relevant for my work in Sudan. It is such a privilege to be here. With no local libraries in Sudan I need to buy books or photocopy articles before I go back. Much is available on the internet also, but I still find my internet skills are limited.

Hello again. I have just had various interviews with CMS concerning my work in Sudan. They are very happy for me to continue. I am very impressed with the calibre of the people in CMS Headquarters in Oxford and the level of support they give me. Pray for more people to hear God's call to serve in Sudan as there are now only two of us there. I am now in Gloucester and about to start my MA Summer School where they will give us one years' lectures in three weeks - so pray for me. I am looking forward to seeing my MA colleagues again who come from various countries worldwide.

HOME LEAVE

I write this two hours before I am due to leave Maridi to start my journey to UK for Home Leave. I fly to Uganda today then hope to arrive in UK on 15th. Please pray there are no delays due to volcanic ash cloud or bad weather. Maridi is very OK, is peaceful and there is good rain now. ELECTION RESULTS

Praise God that the elections and announcing of results has gone peacefully in most areas of Sudan. Thanks for your prayers. Wilson, my driver, was not elected so continues his work with me. However there are some very angry candidates who have lost, and want revenge, so continue to pray for Wilson's safety. I only have two weeks before I start my journey to UK for Home Leave so pray for my packing and final arrangements in Maridi. I hope to arrive in UK on May 15th, so see you soon.

ELECTION FEVER

Elections start in 4 days time and will be from April 11th - 13th. Maridi is calm and we are ready for voting - all preparations have been made on time. However we hear of boycotts, rigging etc. and pray the election will be free and fair. It is our first experience of an election so it is a learning process. Let us do our best and learn from our mistakes. Let everyone vote wisely. May those who are not elected, accept it peacefully. My driver Wilson is one of the candidates. Pray for God's will to be done and for protection over his life as dirty games are being played by some. Many non Sudanese have left Sudan as they fear trouble. I am still in Maridi and trusting God.
Pray for us, and also pray for rain.

SUDAN ELECTIONS

It is less than three weeks until our elections which are due to start on April 11th. Yesterday the President of Southern Sudan came to Maridi as part of his election campaign - huge, huge crowds turned out to welcome him. Maridi has stayed calm so far during campaigning though there have been problems further north. My driver Wilson is campaigning to be elected as MP for Maridi West - pray for God's will to be done. Dirty games are already being played which threaten free and fair elections - we hold our breath and wait to see. Many expats are leaving Sudan before the elections as they fear trouble, but I think we are all staying put in Maridi as we have peace loving tribes here. Evacuation plans are in place if the situation deteriorates.
Pray as I am about to complete the last of my four assignments for this year for my MA studies. I hope to arrive in Filey on May 15th for three months Home Leave.

VISIT OF PRESIDENT

Great excitement in Maridi today as the President of Sudan, Omar Al Bashir is visiting Maridi. His plane is due to land in one hours time. Will be interesting to see his reception after all the years of Civil War. He along with thousands of others are campaigning before our Elections due to start on April 11th. Pray for security and free and fair elections. Home Leave is looming and I hope to arrive in Filey on May 15th.

HOT AND HOTTER

Not my favourite time of year. Yesterday it reached 100F. Dry season means dust and more dust, and dodging the sun when possible. Sleeping at night is very hot. Rain not expected till March. At least I have less travelling to do now. Making plans for my Home Leave which will be from May until August. Some of it is study leave for my MA Course, some will be holiday and the rest will be visiting some of my Link Churches. God is blessing our work here.

Greetings and a Happy New Year to you all. Hope you are surviving the cold weather, though I gather Filey has escaped the worst of it. Today it is 57F here, so please send us some snow! How was your Christmas? I was sick with malaria and bad cold over Christmas so my Christmas activities were curtailed somewhat. New Year has been better. As we approach elections due in April there is increasing insecurity in some parts of Southern Sudan. Maridi has remained peaceful so far. Keep praying for us.

A HOT MARIDI

Greetings. The rains have stopped and temperatures are soaring as we enter the dry season. Christmas is the hottest time of the year. I am about to visit the last two of our eight Archdeaconries for Discipleship Training. As Wilson is driving for me he does his Youth Work in the centres as we travel. We will go to Uganda for 10 days in December to do the things we can't do here. Will be back in Maridi for Christmas. I hear there have been terrible storms in UK. Hope Filey has escaped the worst. Seven puppies were born last week.

LATEST NEWS

We are moving from rainy season into dry season so temperatures are soaring. Rain has been good this year so we expect a good harvest. A new Area Diocese is being created out of Maridi Diocese - Olo Diocese, and a young man will soon be consecrated Area Bishop. Last week we had excellent visit to Eddi which is 17 miles out into the bush. This is the territory of the Lord's Resistance Army - the Ugandan rebel group which has been terrorizing Southern Sudan. I had four heavily armed soldiers with me day and night. There were no problems and we completed our work well. My MA studies are on target at present.

ELECTRICITY AND WATER?

Are we seeing development at last and moving into the 21st century? Maridi town now has street lights. Next year I may even be able to switch on a light. Piped water to a tap outside the house will also soon be a reality. People are starting to harvest and there is still good rain. I am busy with my MA studies which are going well. My little kittens are going to new homes one by one and their mother, Precious, misses them. How is Filey? I expect many shops now show signs of Christmas - nothing of that here! I would love some calendars for 2010. Can anyone help?

DEATH OF FORMER ARCHBISHOP

I am sorry to report the death of His Grace Joseph Marona the former Bishop of Maridi Diocese and retired Archbishop of the Episcopal Church of the Sudan. He has been alongside me ever since I came to work in Sudan. As Bishop of Maridi he really welcomed me and supported me when I first came to Sudan. I have appreciated his wise advice ever since. He has met my parents and often asked after them. He died last night in Khartoum after a long period of bad health, and it looks as though he may be buried in Juba the capital of Southern Sudan. I have been to see his wife Mama Eunice to comfort and pray for her. She is distraught but said ' let me be a good witness to Jesus'.

GOOD HARVEST

Hello. I have just returned from a visit to Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan as there were various documents we needed. It was very hot and dusty. Maridi had much rain while we were away. We are about to reap our second harvest this year, yet only 100 miles away there is famine as the rains failed there. Pray for our Following Jesus Course as it starts in every parish on September 18th. I expect Filey will soon be quieter again as the schools go back. I do miss the Filey tea shops!

Hello again. The Discipleship Training went very well last week as I trained the Archdeacons and Rural Deans who will now go and train their Pastors. All parishes in the diocese will start the 'Following Jesus' Course on September 18th. Maridi is very OK with good rain so crops are growing well. I am now very busy with my MA Studies so pray for me.

BACK IN AFRICA

Hello from Kampala in Uganda. I had good flights back yesterday and am adjusting to the heat here. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in UK. The Summer School for my MA went well but pray as I now have four big assignments to write in the next nine months. I also had a super holiday in Devon with my very special, loving parents. Please pray for the health of both of them. I fly back to Maridi in Sudan on August 4th and then very soon after that will start the training of leaders for our new Discipleship Course. My MA Dissertation will be looking at how it is difficult to retain youth in the Church in Maridi and to discover to what extent this is due to a lack of discipleship training? If you know anyone in UK who has experience in this and can help me with getting resources then please let me know.

STUDY GOING WELL

I have just started the third week of the three week MA Summer School which I am doing here at Redcliffe College in Gloucester. It has been great and very relevant for my work in Sudan. The workload is tremendous and my brain is now in overload! I then have four assignments to write once I return to Sudan. MA STUDIES

Greetings. I am now at Redcliffe College in Gloucester for three weeks for a Summer School as I start my MA in 'Global Issues in Contemporary Mission'. There are six students in my group. I have survived the first three days of study well as it is nearly 30 years since I graduated with my BA Degree. The College is great with excellent food and a family atmosphere. I have also found a good local church where I was given a warm welcome last Sunday. My studies are very relevant for my work in Sudan and I'm already looking at how we do mission from new perspectives. Please pray as I continue with my studies. There is much reading to be done and assignments to write. After I finish here I will have a holiday in Devon with Mum and Dad before returning to Sudan at the end of July.

PRAISE GOD

We had a wonderful time during the week when FLAME International were with us in Maridi. They were teaching and ministering to us in trauma counselling, due to the traumas caused by war here. Many people were touched by God. Bishop Justin is away in Tanzania for two weeks. He is with other Bishops from East Africa on a conference aiming at securing more finances for our churches here. I leave Maridi on May 28th to start my journey to UK. I arrive in UK on June 3rd. I am coming for two months for a Summer School for my MA studies, and also some holiday. We are now getting good rain so crops are growing well. Security locally is good at present.

Hello from Sudan

Hello. It's Trisha again. Sorry for the delay in updating the blog but the internet has not been working here. We are very OK and having good rain now. Visitors from Flame International and others from Northern Ireland are due to arrive in Maridi on April 28th. Great to have visitors here. Security is much improved at present. Pray it stays that way. I arrive in UK on June 3rd for two months. This is mainly due to my further studies with my MA but also some holiday too. I have three tiny kittens who are adorable.

CANON PATRICIA!

Great news to share with you! On March 15th I was made a Canon of All Saint's Cathedral here in Maridi Diocese. I was also appointed as the Diocesan Co-ordinator for Discipleship and Training. I will be handing on my present TEE work to others in the Province. My driver, Wilson has been appointed as the Diocesan Youth Leader, but he will still drive for me. Even as a Canon I also have another title - Canon Missioner which means I am responsible for mission outreach in the Cathedral, but most of this will be through my work with discipleship and training.

Hello to you all from a hot and dusty Maridi in Southern Sudan. We are hoping rain will soon come and therefore reduce temperatures. This is my first attempt at blogging and I hope to keep you up to date with news through it. Many thanks for all your efforts with the TIDA tea which raised money for our youth group band here. Maridi is calm at present and we pray it will stay that way. My staff also greet you and I am really grateful for your support and ongoing prayers. Our Diocesan Synod start on 12th for four days and is very important in the life of our diocese here.
